Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, in Bombay, India, the only son of four children of Anis Ahmed Rushdie and Nagin Butt. His father was a businessman who studied at the University of Cambridge in England. Rushdie had a happy childhood and he was always surrounded by books. Rushdie remembers wanting to be a writer at the age of five. At the age of fourteen, he was sent to England to attend a private school called rugby. His classmates used to torment him because he was Indian and because he had no athletic abilities.

Rushdie later moved to Cambridge, as his father did, and his experience there was much more positive. He received his master’s degree in history in 1968. After a brief career as an actor, he worked as a free-lance advertising copywriter in England from 1970 to 1980. The experience of exile (living outside the country of birth), which he shares.
