Biography of Monique Denise Ingram
Moses Ingram is a rising star in the world of theater. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Ingram has overcome many obstacles on her journey to becoming a successful actress. Ingram grew up in a blended family of six children. Her mother worked in childcare and her stepfather worked for the city. At age 10, her mother and a teacher at Windsor Hills Elementary enrolled her in an after–school theater program.
This is where Ingram discovered her love for acting. Ingram went on to attend the Baltimore School for the Arts, where she graduated in 2012. Although she was accepted to Howard University, she declined the offer due to financial limitations and instead enrolled at Baltimore City Community College. While attending Baltimore City Community College, Ingram took on multiple part–time jobs and scholarships to fund her schooling. In 2015, she won a regional competition from the National Society of Arts and Letters.
The following year, she finished fourth in the nationals. In 2016, Ingram was accepted to the Yale School of Drama. Before starting Yale, she renamed herself, Moses. “So when we got to school [Yale] they wanted us to register our names because this is the first time they would be publicized so people can see them. And before I got to Yale I had, had such a time just trying to make things work that my name just didn’t feel suited.
So, I prayed and asked God, ‘What is it? I know it‘s not my name now, but it is something.’ And a few days later, I just heard Moses in my head and that was it.” Ingram received a Princess Grace Award in 2018. In her final year at Yale, she received rave reviews for her lead performance as Viola in an Afrocentric version of Shakespeare‘s “Twelfth Night.” She graduated with her Master of Fine Arts in June 2019.

Moses Ingram Career
It’s been a little over a month since “The Queen’s Gambit” premiered on Netflix, and the show’s breakout star Anya Taylor–Joy is still adjusting to her newfound fame. “It’s all very surreal,” she tells Variety. “I’m very lucky that the show has been so well–received, but it’s all still sinking in.” Taylor–Joy stars as Beth Harmon, a troubled chess prodigy who battles addiction and personal demons on her way to becoming a world champion in the 1960s–set series.
The role has earned her rave reviews and even an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie. But it’s not just the critical acclaim that has taken Taylor–Joy by surprise — it’s also the way that the show has resonated with viewers around the world. “The response has been so global, and that’s been really overwhelming,” she says.
“I’ve been getting messages from people in countries I’ve never even been to before, telling me how much the show meant to them. It’s been incredible.” One of the most gratifying aspects of the show’s success, Taylor–Joy says, is the way that it has inspired people to pick up a chess set and give the game a try. “It’s been really heartwarming to see so many people — particularly young girls — getting into chess because of the show,” she says. “I think Beth is such a great role model for anyone who feels like they don’t fit into the mold of what society tells them they should be. She’s a misfit, and she’s unapologetic about it.

I think a lot of people see a little bit of themselves in her.” Taylor–Joy is no stranger to playing strong–willed outsiders — she previously starred as the title character in the 2016 horror hit “The Witch” and as the mutant telekinetic teenager Illyana Rasputin in this year’s “The New Mutants” — but she says that Beth Harmon is by far the most complex character she’s ever played. “Beth is such a contradictory person, and that was one of the things that really drew me to the role,” she says. “She’s incredibly intelligent and determined, but she’s also very damaged and vulnerable. I loved getting to explore all of those different sides of her.” To prepare for the role, Taylor–Joy took chess lessons from grandmaster Bruce Pandolfini and worked with a dialect coach to perfect Beth’s Kentucky accent.
She also spent hours watching old footage of world championship chess matches to get a sense of the “intense focus” that top–level players bring to the game. “I wanted to make sure that I was doing the chess justice, because it’s such an important part of the show,” she says. “I wanted Beth to feel like a real chess prodigy, and I think we achieved that.” Although “The Queen’s Gambit” is set in the 1960s, Taylor–Joy says that the themes of the show — including Beth’s struggles with addiction and her journey to self–acceptance — are just as relevant today as they were back then. “I think the show is very timely, in a lot
