Who is Dolly Parton?
Dolly Rebecca Parton (born January 19, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman, known primarily for her work in country music. After achieving success as a songwriter for others, Parton made her album debut in 1967 with Hello, I’m Dolly, which led to success during the remainder of the 1960s (both as a solo artist and with a series of duet albums with Porter Wagoner), before her sales and chart peak came during the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. Parton’s albums in the 1990s did not sell as well, but she achieved commercial success again in the new millennium and has released albums on various independent labels since 2000, including her own label, Dolly Records. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
Early life and career
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in Pitman Center, Tennessee. He is the fourth of twelve children born to Avie Lee Caroline (née Owens; 1923–2003) and Robert Lee Parton Sr. (1921–2000). As of 2021, Parton has three deceased siblings. Parton’s middle name comes from his maternal uncle Rebecca (right) Whited. Parton’s father, known as “Lee”, worked in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, first as a sharecropper, and then as a tenant farmer, and then looking after his own small tobacco farm and land. He also carried out construction work to supplement the meagre income of the farm. Despite his father’s illiteracy, Parton has often commented that he was one of the most intelligent people in terms of business and profit making.
Parton’s mother, Avie Lee, took care of their large family. Her 11 pregnancies at 20 years (the tenth twin) made her a 12-year-old mother at the age of 35. Parton credits his musical abilities to his mother; Often in poor health, she is still able to keep at home and entertain her children with Smoky Mountain folklore and antique lyrics. Avi Lee’s family is originally from Wales and they sang old songs of immigrants who migrated to South Appalachia a century earlier. Avi Lee’s father, Jack Owens, was a Pentecostal preacher, and Parton and his siblings all attended church regularly. Parton has long credited his father for his business acumen and his mother’s family for his musical skills. When Parton was a young girl, her family moved from the Pitman Center area to a farm in nearby Locust Ridge. Most of his cherished memories of youth took place there.
Music career
In 1967, musician and country music entertainer Porter Wagner invited Parton to join his company, offering him a regular place on his weekly syndicated television program The Porter Wagner Show and on his roadshow. Documented in his 1994 autobiography, initially, most of Wagner’s audience was dissatisfied that Norma Jean, the performer whom Parton had replaced, had left the show and was reluctant to accept Parton (sometimes uttering loudly for Norma Jean from the audience). That song, a remake of Tom Paxton’s “The Last Thing on My Mind”, was released in late 1967
Parton’s first solo single for RCA Victor, “Just Because I’m a Woman”, was released in the summer of 1968 and was a moderate chart hit, peaking at number 17. Over the next two years, none of his solo attempts — even “In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)”, which later became a norm — were as successful as his duet with Wagner.
